More cooking adventures

On Sunday, I thought it would be a fine idea to give dried beans a chance. And I did. At 9:00PM on Monday evening. That was not well-planned. By 11:00PM, I had some marvelous cannellini beans cooked with shallots, garlic, crushed red pepper, smoky ham, white wine, sage, parsley, and thyme. It was great, it just took forever. I think I’ll stick with canned beans.

Less-perishable produce from Russo's

Yesterday, I bought a ton of produce at the Russo’s veggie market at MIT. Russo’s comes around every Tuesday to sell delicious fresh veggies. New to me this week: oyster mushrooms. I’m not sure what to do with them! I think I’ll just sauté them and see what happens. I also got endive, a piece of lemongrass, ginger, more cilantro than I could possibly ever need, a spaghetti squash, and a single beet. I love beets! They’re fantastic roasted up in the oven. You can literally wipe off the skins with a paper towel. It’s pretty fantastic. I don’t think there’s a single veggie that doesn’t benefit from oven roasting. That reminds me, I also scored a big ole’ bag of local carrots for 75 cents. This market is ridiculous!

This past weekend, I got some fantastic freshly-made pumpkin pasta from Capone Foods of Somerville, one of my favorite places to get fresh pasta when I lived in Somerville. I want to get a couple sheets to make pumpkin lasagna with as a side dish for Thanksgiving. They also make some pretty fantastic alfredo sauce, sold frozen. The proprietor, Al, is very friendly and knowledgeable: I seriously do love going there. I wish I still lived closer so that my trips didn’t become quarterly (or in this most recent case, annual).
